In this first course module, I'd like to introduce you to the challenges that graduate students and postdoctoral researchers face related to career development, and how to overcome these challenges by starting your job search on the right foot. This module is designed to enlighten and inspire students during their studies about the next steps in their career path. Students will explore the wide range of professions open to master’s and PhD graduates, enabling students to make informed and deliberate choices.

  • Apprenez à mieux vous connaître grâce à des outils d'introspection : développez des techniques d'auto-évaluation afin d'aligner vos compétences et vos intérêts avec des parcours professionnels potentiels.

Formateur

Ph. D. Gad Sabbatier

Gad Sabbatier obtained a joint PhD in materials and metallurgical engineering from Université Laval and in mechanical engineering from Université de Haute-Alsace in 2015 in the field of biomaterials. Gad then worked as a researcher at Queen's University and McGill University on collaborative research contracts with companies. He then joined SOVAR and Axelys, organizations dedicated to the development and transfer of innovation from public research. With a Certificate in Educational Leadership from Queen's University, Gad is an outstanding trainer with 15 years of experience. He has a keen understanding of the challenges of transitioning from academia to non-academic careers through his personal experience, his position as co-founder of the 2nd Lab, and having accompanied 150+ graduate students and post-doctoral researchers toward careers meaningful for society.

The 2nd lab helped me realize that there were more than one industry career path available. I was mostly aware of R&D careers and I was not sure this avenue was for me. I ended up in a R&D position after all, but after having ruled out other possibilities, rather than by default. Also, my mentor was very dedicated, she helped me a lot by proofreading my CVs and cover letters or helping me practice mock interviews, which helped me gain confidence and insight on what really makes a candidature valuable.

My view of my career path changed during my time with 2nd Lab because I was able to see the path forward into industry that wasn't as obvious when I was deep into my research.
